Study in Australia
Study pathways that lead to work
English, short courses, vocational education and higher education. Choose study that fits a real job goal.
Pathways
Ways to study
Many people combine them: English first, then a short course or a qualification.
English
English courses help with study and work. Many TAFEs, colleges and community centres run them.
Short courses
Short courses and skill sets (a small group of units from a qualification) teach one skill, for example work health and safety or software.
Vocational education (VET)
Certificates and diplomas focus on job skills. TAFEs and registered training organisations (RTOs, providers allowed to deliver nationally recognised training) deliver them.
Higher education
Bachelor and postgraduate degrees at universities and other higher education providers.
Bridging programs
Some regulated professions offer bridging programs for people trained overseas. The professional body sets these out.
Recognition of prior learning
Recognition of prior learning (RPL) can count your skills and experience towards a vocational qualification.

Before you enrol
Check before you pay
- Check the provider and course on training.gov.au (for VET) or with the provider.
- Check that the qualification is current, and has not been replaced by a newer version (superseded).
- Ask what the course leads to, and whether employers in your field value it.
- Ask about credit or recognition of prior learning for what you already know.
- Read the full costs and the refund terms before you pay.

Study and visas
If you are in Australia on a visa, check its conditions before you enrol. We cannot advise on this.
We do not give migration advice. For visa questions, speak to a registered migration agent (check the register at mara.gov.au) or the Department of Home Affairs.
Can I study while I am here on a visa?
We cannot advise on visas or their conditions. Speak to a registered migration agent (check the register at mara.gov.au) or the Department of Home Affairs before you enrol.
Will a course help me get a job?
A course can build skills employers want, but no course can promise a job. Choose a course that fits a real job goal.
How is my overseas qualification counted for study?
The university, TAFE or college you apply to usually assesses it for entry or credit. Ask each one early.
